The Shepherd and His Sheep

The Shepherd and His Sheep

I myself will search for my sheep and look after them. —Ezekiel 34:11

Growing up on a farm, I was especially fascinated by the sheep my uncle took care of. He built a pen for them, but somehow they always managed to escape. Sometimes there were 15 to 20 sheep scattered across the highway obstructing traffic, with my uncle chasing them back home, yelling, “Pen, pen, pen!” At other times, he would search the entire neighborhood for his flock. He always made sure every single one got home safely.

The love God has for us is reflected in my uncle's love for his sheep. In Ezekiel 34:11, the Lord says, “I myself will search for my sheep and look after them.” Like my uncle who cared for his sheep, God wants to ensure we, His sheep, make it home and that we are safe and sound in his care. When I think about how much God cares for me, it’s hard to want to go astray or move away from that love.

Reflection: What are some ways you’ve seen God pursue you?

Prayer Starter:

Father, thank you for your pure, gracious, selfless love. May I find many reasons to stay in your love rather than reasons to go astray. Thank you for pursuing me.
