Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. —Romans 12:2a

After a strenuous day of school, I came home eager to lie in bed and listen to my music, only to find that my headphones were nowhere in sight. I use my headphones everywhere, always, to do everything. So you can understand my dismay when they mysteriously disappeared. As the days passed, I began to accept that I wasn’t going to find them anytime soon. But how was I going to survive the week? I missed my headphones more and more every day. Later in the week I went to my discipleship class, and the teacher brought up a good point that I think God was showing me throughout that entire experience.

I realized that a big part of spiritual maturity is having less attachment to the world, and that the things in this world are there for us to enjoy in moderation. It was an opportunity for me to evaluate my attachment to my headphones and the other things I prioritize over spending time with God. The Apostle Paul says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Romans 12:2). By the end of the week, I had put more effort into a daily devotional with God and using my phone less. I was more present in the moment.

Sometimes our attachment to the things of this world can distract us from having a stronger relationship with God. Whether it’s spending too much time on our phone or watching TV, let’s evaluate how we might be able to function without them and maybe take a break every now and then to spend more time deepening our relationship with God.

Reflect: What are some of the biggest distractions in your life? How can you prioritize God more this week?

Prayer starter:

Lord, help me to know when to separate from the world and to always fix my eyes on you.
