The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. —John 10:10 (NKJV)

It was a typical workday. As I struggled to lock the front door of my home, I realized that the lock was broken. Frantically, I jumped in my car and, enroute to the office, reached for my cell phone and rang my husband. “I left the door open. It won’t lock!” I exclaimed, anxiety rising in my heart. As I continued driving to work, I questioned myself. Why was I so afraid of leaving an open door to my home? Of course, thieves could be lurking!
My mind transitioned to Scripture. In John 10:10, Jesus says, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they [my sheep] may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (NKJV). The thief that Jesus is referring to is religious people who spread false teachings that lead to spiritual death instead of life. I felt a sense of conviction. How many times have I allowed the enemy to steal in my life through false beliefs and teachings? I saw the importance of safeguarding my household items—mere material things; however, was I being diligent in safeguarding the peace that was freely given to me through Christ’s salvation? At the onset of that day, I realized that the moment I opened my heart to anxiety, the enemy was quick to steal my peace.
Jesus tells us to not be anxious over anything, but by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving make our request known to him (Philippians 4:6). In John 14:27, Jesus also reassures us that He has left His peace with us. However, as I realized that morning, we have the responsibility of safeguarding His peace.
Reflect: Do you recall a particular moment in your life when you allowed the enemy’s lies to come in and steal your peace? What lessons did you learn from that experience?
Prayer Starter:
Lord, help me to recognize if there are areas in my life where I have opened the door to the lies of the enemy. Help me to hold on to Your peace and Your promise of life in abundance.
