In God’s Time

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps. —Proverbs 6:9

It was Monday night and time to meet with my Net Group; however, I didn’t feel excited as I normally would for our weekly Bible study. It had been a hard two weeks, and the trials seemed to be crowding in from all corners, including an overdose of iron tablets that gave me a fever and terrible migraine headache, and battling with a skin parasite my son had contracted through a sandfly bite. Nevertheless, I decided to attend Bible study to take my mind off my distress.

We had been studying the life of Jesus and His interactions with the Jews. And now, there in front of me was the Scripture: “Jesus said to them, the right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right” (John 7:6). Our group leader asked, “How many times have we missed the right time because we were too busy doing things on our own time?” Had I not joined the net meeting that night, I would have missed that life-giving message my soul so badly needed.

I sat there thinking how desperate I had become in trying to find a cure for my son’s condition.  I wanted an immediate healing; I wanted it done on my timing. Then the Lord reminded me about his perfect timing shown throughout His ministry. When Jairus approached Jesus and pleaded with Him to heal his dying daughter, as they were on the road word came that the girl had died. It was too late! But Jesus continued to Jairus’ house and brought the girl back to life (Mark 5:35-42). And then there’s Jesus’s friend Lazarus. Though Jesus waited until Lazarus died and it seemed all hope was lost, the Lord raised him from the dead. Jesus is the one who holds time. His timing is perfect.

Indeed, God’s timing is perfect beyond our understanding. We can trust Him to answer at just the right time.

Reflection: When have you been in a trial and wanted immediate deliverance? How would things have been different if you had trusted God’s timing?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, forgive me for wanting things done in my own time. Help me to trust You and fully surrender to Your perfect will and Your perfect timing.
