The Family We Choose

Your people will be my people and your God my God. —Ruth 1:16

Last week our church announced the formation of “life groups,” an opportunity to do life together with a small group of believers. This brings to mind the story of Ruth and Naomi in the Bible—one of deep loyalty, love, and sacrifice. After her husband died, Ruth chose to stay with her mother-in-law, Naomi, saying: “Don’t urge me to leave you or turn back from you. Where you go, I will go; where you stay, I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God” (Ruth 1:16).

Ruth didn’t have to stay with Naomi. She could have gone back to her own people, but she chose loyalty over convenience. She cared for Naomi, and they took care of each other in a difficult time. They found strength in their bond. This story isn’t just about familial relationship. It’s about the deep, unconditional love we can share with those we choose to do life with. The brotherhood and sisterhood in Christ is to be like this, being there for each other through thick and thin. Constantly supporting and praying for one another.

Sometimes, the family we choose is the one that makes all the difference. Just like Ruth found her place beside Naomi, as brothers and sisters in Christ, we should find our place and strength in God and each other.

I’m so grateful for my spiritual family. Our bond is something truly special.

Reflect: How have you experienced Ruth-like love and bonding in your home church? How can you help to strengthen it?

Prayer Starter:

Lord Jesus, help me to be loyal to the family you have chosen for me—both my spiritual and blood relatives.
