In the Front Pocket

In the Front Pocket

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid. —Matthew 14:30a

Recently, while driving the church van to pick up workers for Sunday service, I overheard a conversation between two of my sisters in Christ. One of them was telling the other about a pair of earrings that she had been convinced she’d lost. Despite searching her purse countless times, she couldn’t find them. Yet, on that morning while preparing for church, she discovered the earrings right there in the front pocket of the purse she had already searched so thoroughly.

As I listened to their conversation, it reminded me of the event in Matthew 14, when the disciples saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. Peter, full of faith, stepped out of the boat and began walking toward Him. But as Peter neared Jesus, “when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and, beginning to sink, cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’” (v. 30). Jesus was right there in front of him, but Peter lost focus when he was distracted by the stormy sea around him.

The same can happen to us—distractions, whether from our environment or our own thoughts, can pull our attention away from what’s most important. In those moments, it’s easy to feel like we’ve lost our footing. But, as with Peter, Jesus is always there to catch us when we sink into distractions. Nothing is truly lost that cannot be recovered with the help of our Savior. So, if you ever find your heart and mind beset with worry, stay calm, stay focused, and pray. Then, as you search that front pocket, remember to keep your eyes on Jesus. If it is God’s will, He will help you find your lost earrings—or whatever else you’ve been seeking.

Reflect: Have you been seeking a particular possession, relationship, or outcome? What would it mean to shift your focus on Jesus in that particular situation?
