Expecting

Expecting

My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him.— Psalm 62:5 (KJV)

Our family lived on a farm for several years during my childhood. We had a lot of animals, including a huge female pig that became pregnant. Its belly hung almost to the ground. My dad was excited. He believed she would yield about 10 to 15 piglets.  But when she gave birth, only one piglet was born. One. Uno. Just one big piglet. This was a major disappointment to my dad. His expectation was not met.

Sometimes in our lives we place our hopes on things of this world because we believe we see evidence to support those expectations. But the Bible tells us our hope should be in Christ alone. Hebrews 11:6 says, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”  When things get difficult in our Christian walk, we must continue to walk by faith. Scripture also says that all God’s promises are yes – through Christ they are fulfilled (2 Corinthians 1:20). Though we may experience delays in life’s journey, we must not forget that God is faithful.  Delay is not evidence that He will not keep His promise.

Remember that one pig? It was a female, and eventually she became pregnant. At first my dad was skeptical; he reasoned that because she was an "only child," she would also give birth to a single offspring. But unlike her mother, she gave us a hefty litter. My dad’s expectations had diminished, but he eventually got the litter he hoped for.

When we face delays in seeing God’s promises fulfilled, let us not lose hope. Let us keep walking in faith.

Reflection: What things or breakthroughs are you expecting right now? Are your expectations placed on what you can see, or are they placed on God?

Prayer Starter:
