Defending What We Believe

Defending What We Believe

Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. — 1 Peter 3:15a (NIV)

In one of his lectures, Christian apologist Sean McDowell tells a story about standing in line for a new smartphone. While waiting, he was approached by three high school students sharing their faith. Curious, he began to challenge them gently: “Why should I believe the Bible is true?” They quickly quoted Scripture, but he pointed out that quoting the Bible to prove the Bible was circular reasoning. When pressed, the students mentioned ancient manuscripts supporting the Bible's reliability, but they couldn’t explain further. Then McDowell bombarded them with scientific arguments, evolution, DNA similarities, and theories of human origins, showing how easily their confidence could be shaken. Finally, he smiled and confessed, “I’m actually a Christian.” The students were stunned. He told them, “If you’re going to tell people to trust this ancient book, make sure you understand why it’s true.”

That story stayed with me. As I began studying theology and learning about apologetics (defense of the truth of Christianity), I realized how vital it is to know what we believe and why we believe it. The Christian walk is more than reading, praying, and sharing; it’s also defending our faith with truth and wisdom. 1 Peter 3:15 tells us “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” Faith is not fragile; it grows stronger when tested and informed.

We must love God with both heart and mind, studying His Word, understanding the evidence for our faith, and sharing Christ with both passion and knowledge.

Reflect: Do you know how to explain the hope you have in Christ? What steps can you take to deepen your understanding of what you believe?
