Believing in the Unseen

In law enforcement, we rely a great deal on physical evidence to secure convictions in court.  The evidence we gather helps to substantiate the facts, increasing the probability of proving that a crime was committed and that a certain individual committed the said crime.  Without evidence, convincing the magistrate, judge, or jury to believe beyond all reasonable doubt becomes a great challenge. For them to believe, they must see.

It is logical to want to see something in order to believe in its authenticity.  In our Christian walk, however, we are taught the opposite: to walk by faith and not by sight. Our belief is based on things not seen.

By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going” (Hebrews 11:8). “He was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God” (v. 10). Abraham believed he was going to walk the streets of that unseen city because he believed in the promises of God.  He had never been to that city; he had not seen it with his physical eyes.  But he believed that it existed.

What does Scripture also say about Abraham's faith? Paul says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness” (Romans 4:3).

Righteousness is an attribute that belongs to God alone, but when we act in faith it is imputed unto us.

Reflect: What promises have God spoken to you through Scripture or the Holy Spirit? Are you believing in those unseen promises that God has for you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, give me the grace to walk by faith, believing in the not seen because you are faithful in your promises.
