A Drink of Water

A Drink of Water

Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me...rivers of living water will flow from within them.

Nothing quenches a lingering thirst like a drink of water. If I forget to drink water for the day, especially when the day is overwhelming, I find myself with dried, cracked lips and feeling dry on the inside. I reach home and grab a glass of juice, but it just doesn’t hit that spot the way water does. I find myself still needing to drink water to quench my thirst.

The Psalmist wrote, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God” (42:1). Physical thirst relates to our spiritual thirst in so many aspects.  We have a longing or desire to be filled, to have our thirst quenched.  Jesus is the answer to that thirst. He is the living water that never dries up, that never ceases to flow (John 4:4). He promises that once we drink from His water we will never thirst again, and that water will become in us a spring welling up to eternal life (John 4:13-14).

Imagine the relief and refreshment you feel in your body after drinking water. Now imagine that feeling magnified immeasurably as you drink  in the living water. Soak it in. Aaahhh!

Reflect: In your daily life, what outward signs do others see as evidence of Christ's living water flowing within you?

Prayer Starter:

Lord, as my physical body thirsts for water and you provide a drink to quench the thirst, may my soul also be quenched by Your living water.  May it flow through me to proclaim Your kingdom to the world.
