My three-year-old nephew, Aziel, is at an age where he is very curious about what different things are used for, or how they work. One day, when he was in the kitchen with my mom as she was cooking, he spotted a pair of scissors and helped himself to them. Heading outside, he saw my mom's paracord patio chair and, one by one, he cut the cords. When he was done, he continued walking around as if nothing was wrong. When my mom discovered what he had done, she was upset and scolded him, but she didn't punish him. He cried, but soon he was back to his happy self, knowing his grandma loved him very much and forgave him.
Sometimes we walk around with heavy burdens when God is calling us to walk in freedom. Even when we repent and ask God for forgiveness, we continue to walk in guilt and shame. Romans 8:1-2 says, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” One day during my quiet time, I was reflecting on this verse, and it helped me understand that whatever has happened to me, or whatever wrongs I have done, those failings are not enough to keep God away from me. I learned that I am not my past mistakes or hurts or what people think of me. Since that day, every time I start to feel ashamed or less than, I remember what that verse says and I repeat it, letting it settle in my heart.
Once we repent, we should never feel that it is impossible for God to forgive us. God is a God of redemption, not condemnation.
Reflect: Are you carrying guilt or shame about something? Are you ready to exchange it for the freedom that God promises to those who believe in Christ?
Prayer Starter:
Thank you, Father God, for sending Jesus to die on the cross for my sins and take away all condemnation.
