When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. —Isaiah 43:2a

I cringed hearing the worship team sing, “You’re never gonna let me down.” How can I honestly sing those words, God? I prayed. I trusted you, but my grandson, Jairus, never came home from the hospital. My daughter and son-in-law, my grandsons, our whole family is brokenhearted. God, you let us down.
When we say that someone let us down, we mean they disappointed us. Disappointment comes when we expect something we don’t receive. We are disappointed when someone doesn’t live up to our expectations, either in their actions, words, or attitudes. We are disappointed because we discover we don’t know the person as well as we thought we did.
I was disappointed because God was not living up to my expectations. I know pain is part of life on this earth and we as Christians are not exempt from it. I have seen throughout the Bible that even the most faithful of God’s people go through pain and suffering, and I have experienced many dangerous and difficult situations in my life. But I expected that God would heal my grandson. I felt God had let me down.
But through the sorrow, God never let go of me or my family. He has walked with me through the fire, through the valley of the shadow of death, through deep waters of grief and pain. He never once left my side. He is teaching me many things I can only learn through grief. He comforts me with the knowledge that Jairus is safe with the Father, and I will meet him there. God didn’t do what I wanted and expected, but I go forward knowing He is good.
Isaiah 43:2-3a (NIV) says:
When you pass through the waters,
I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
For I am the LORD your God.
When you feel let down by God, remember He will never let you go. Trust in His goodness even when you don’t understand what He is doing.
Reflect: When have you felt let down by God? How could remembering His goodness and His presence help you through those times?
Prayer starter:
Jesus, help me to trust in your goodness and believe your promise to never leave me or let go of me.
