Tell Your Story

Tell Your Story

I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever; with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations. —Psalm 89:1(KJV)

Recently my husband and I attended a missionary conference at our home church in the United States. The activities of the conference were well planned, and we enjoyed them. But what impressed me most were the conversations I had with church members throughout the week, hearing what God had been doing in their lives. I heard story after story of God’s healing power restoring life and health and relationships that had been broken. Hearing their stories encouraged me and brought praise to my lips. What a mighty God we serve!

There was a time in the conference when the missionaries were asked to pray for or encourage the congregation. My words to them: keep telling your stories! When God does something great in your life, don’t keep it to yourself. Psalm 89:1 says, “I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever; with my mouth will I make known thy faithfulness to all generations.” (KJV)

When we share what God has done in our lives, three things happen. First, God receives the glory He deserves. Things didn’t just get better; we prayed, and God answered. Second, the people who hear are encouraged to trust God when they need help. One way faith grows is by hearing how God answered prayer for someone else. And third, our faith grows. We remember how God has helped us in the past and we believe that He can do it again.

When David wanted to go out to meet Goliath, King Saul tried to discourage him. But David told him about the times God had delivered him while David was guarding his father’s sheep. When a lion and a bear came after the flock, David fought them and killed them. David told Saul, “The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1Samuel 17:37) When David told his story, the LORD received glory, Saul had the faith to let David go, and David had faith to fight the enemy.

Reflect: What has God done in your life? Who needs to hear your story?
