Hold on Tight

Hold on Tight

I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely. Psalm 63:8 NLT

Inching along in traffic each morning, I watch women walking their children to school, often with toddlers tagging along. Some of these little ones obviously think they are too big to hold their mom’s hand. They keep trying to pull away to walk alone.  I see other children trying in vain to reach for mom’s hand, but she’s not paying attention or doesn’t want to be touched. Sometimes I see a child stumble and fall with no one holding them, and they are holding no one. And then I smile when I see the mother and child who are holding tightly to each other, the child enjoying the security of mom’s hand and the mom keeping her child safe.

The heading on Psalm 63 tells us it was written by David when he was in the desert. He was “in a dry and thirsty land,” pursued by those who wanted to harm him. But he knew God was holding on to him. And he was clinging – holding onto God.  No matter what his surroundings or his circumstance, he was holding onto the One who was holding onto Him.

Just as little children sometimes assert their independence and want to walk hands-free, we can try to make it on our own when the way seems easy. We’re not quite as close to the Lord as we were in more difficult times. And He lets us pull away if we choose to. But the Father sees further ahead than we can, and He knows what can make us stumble. The safest course is always to hold tightly to Him, staying as close as possible.

We can be sure that our heavenly Father will never be too preoccupied or busy to hold us securely. He will not leave us to find our way alone. His right hand holds us. He is always so close we can reach out and hold on to Him. That is our confidence as we walk through this life.

Reflect: Are you holding onto God, staying as close as you can? If there is any distance, what can you do to change that?

Prayer Starter:

Father, thank You that Your right hand is holding me securely, that I am safe in You. Help me to keep on clinging to You.
