Stripped

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. —Proverbs 3:5

It was Saturday, and everything was set for our road trip to Chetumal, Mexico where I would be driving my daughter to take a bus to Cancun. I was elated that three of my friends would be accompanying us and helping me with the four hours of driving each way. Most importantly, I was relieved I would have assistance figuring out the GPS on my phone, for which I had heavily relied on my techie daughter the last time we had driven to Chetumal. By Sunday morning when we left Belmopan, two of my three friends had cancelled. No worries, I told myself. One helper is all I need. We prayed for traveling mercies, and off we went.

When we reached Mexican Immigration, however, my one remaining friend was told she could go no farther. Her border permit was valid only for travel to Guatemala at our western border, not Mexico at that northern border. Disappointment was all over her face and worry all over mine. But I quickly recovered, confident that I had the GPS, and I had been practicing using it all the way from Belmopan. But then, driving back alone from Chetumal to the border—you guessed it—the GPS stopped working! Stripped of all external help, I had no choice but to use the road signs and rely on God to get me home safely.

Proverbs 3:5-6 exhorts us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Although I had prayed for God’s guidance and provision, I realized it was on my friends and the GPS that I was mostly leaning, not on Him.

God was merciful and kind to teach me a lesson in a relatively painless way. May we all have a renewed commitment to truly rely on Him in all we do.

Reflect: Is there a person or thing on which you're leaning for help or comfort more than on God? What would it look like to fully lean on God instead?

Prayer Starter:

Heavenly Father, thank You for being my always-present help in times of need. Forgive me for when I put my trust in people or things instead of You.
