A Gentle Whisper

A Gentle Whisper

And after the fire came a gentle whisper. —1 Kings 19: 12

Each Independence Day Parade here in Belmopan, I look forward to seeing, among the many other schools, the University of Belize, my alma mater and current employer. This year, UB led with one of its sleek, brand-new vans, boldly displaying the school’s purple and gold logo and artistic depictions of our Black Jaguar mascot. Behind the van was our massive eighteen-wheeler float truck, horns blaring and Caribbean music blasting from the huge speakers at the back. Immediately below, on the street, students and university administrators danced energetically, their t-shirts and attire displaying white, red, and blue patriotic colors and themes. And then there was Karyn, a young lecturer recently employed at UB. Following the high-energy hype of the other UB participants, she drove her sweet little compact SUV decorated with yellow and lavender balloons and a neatly designed poster quietly advertising the university’s Early Childhood Education Program.

In 1 Kings 19, God told Elijah He would soon pass by the cave in which Elijah was staying. As Elijah waited, there was a massive wind outside, like a hurricane, but God was not in the wind. Then there was an earthquake, but God was not in the earthquake. There was a fire, but again, God was not in the fire. When the LORD came, it was in a gentle whisper (v.11-12). As quiet and small as God’s voice was, Elijah heard it, and he “went out and stood at the mouth of the cave” (v. 13).

There are times when God shows up in our lives in dramatic ways: miraculous healings, supernatural rescues, financial provision in the exact amount needed. But equally important and praiseworthy are the quiet ways God shows Himself daily: A visit from a neighbor just because. Clean laundry a husband folded and put away. A child’s small hand slipped into yours.

May we always recognize and respond to His quiet presence and work in our daily lives.

Reflect: What are some big and small ways that God has shown up for you? Were there any small ones you might have missed or glanced over?
