Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. — Ephesians 6:17

A group of john crows was flying straight toward me as I walked home from school. I slowed down to contemplate my next move. The low-flying vultures had both my heart and mind racing. I wanted to turn around and go the other way, but I’d already reached so far down the street, and I had a meeting I was going to be late to. “You’ll be okay, calm down,” I thought as I inched closer. “John crows don’t like things that are alive; they don’t even see you.” Still, I felt anxious. None of my self-talk was working. Then a familiar Bible verse came to mind: “Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil.” As I began to recite these words inwardly, I was immediately calmed and continued around the corner.
Scripture tells us that “The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). It is “the sword of the spirit” (Ephesians 6:17). When we consume God’s word regularly, He is always in and with us, but we must learn to depend on and actively call on Him to get relief. Jeremiah said that when he “ate” the word of God, it gave him joy and delight (Jeremiah 15:16).
God intends for us to have that experience too. He is our protector. We are equipped with His word in all our battles. Let’s use this powerful weapon we’ve been given.
Reflection: Is there a struggle in your life that you’ve been trying to overcome on your own? What is one step you can take today in applying God’s word in that situation?
Prayer starter:
God, help me to remember to reach for your Word first, not as a last resort, in every situation.
