Techie and Talkie

The human body has many parts…. So it is with the body of Christ. —1 Corinthians 12:12 (NLT)

My mom and I were planning to visit a few Mexican cities; we were familiar with two of them but had never been to the other two. I immediately got on my laptop and phone, booked a bed-and-breakfast, downloaded the Uber app, and installed an offline version of Google Translate. In Chetumal, Merida, and Cancun, everything went smoothly. I was able to use my smartphone and debit card for pretty much everything. But then we entered rural Mexico, and the local data plan we had bought refused to work. I, the techie, felt useless. But not my mom. She's a talkie, so even though her Spanish is limited, she chatted up complete strangers who helped us make it to our final destination in Leona Vicario. With two very different skill sets, we were able to work together and get many things done.

Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:12 that “the human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ” (NLT). God intends for us to work together, using our different gifts to complement each other and fulfill His purpose for us. Although we are each gifted in unique ways, it’s impossible for us to exist without each other. If we were each gifted with every skill, we would have no need to live or work with other people. That would be pretty boring, wouldn’t it? Working together allows us to form relationships and bonds, which gives us opportunities to love and bless each other.

We are not independent beings; we are interdependent. And as followers of Christ, we are called to come together to fulfill God’s plans.

Reflect: How can you use your gifts to help build God’s Kingdom? What things do you need help with, and who do you know that can help?

Prayer Starter:

Thank you, Lord, for the gifts you have blessed me with. Show me how I can use them to help others. And help me to see the beauty in cooperating with others to do Your work because of our love for You.
