Remembering the Good

Remembering the Good

Think of all the wonderful things [The Lord] has done for you. –1 Samuel 12:24

The first time my mom and I drove to the Belize-Mexican border, we parked on the Belize side and hired a taxi to take us across to Chetumal. The driver took us to the immigration building at the “old border.” However, the officials refused to serve us or even explain what the problem was. Our taxi driver, who was now gone, had apparently broken some rule that we couldn’t understand. We were left stranded.

I kept replaying the incident in my mind, only focusing on what went wrong. It wasn’t until hours later, in Chetumal, that I took note of all the people who did help us that morning. At the Belize border, an official had allowed us to postpone paying the parking fee until we returned, to save us time. Then there was the Spanish-speaking Belizean lady who tried to advocate for us to the Mexican officials. And two men had helped us find a taxi to the “new” border crossing.

That day, I was acting like the Israelites when they were on their way to the Promised Land. God provided for them in so many ways, yet the Israelites were too focused on their problems to notice their blessings. Instead, they constantly complained about what they didn’t have. They eventually chose to worship false gods instead of the Lord (Judges 2:11-23).

When problems arise, God doesn’t want us to be like the Israelites. He wants us to trust Him, allow Him to fix things, and accept that His ways are best. A heart of gratitude for what God has done opens doors to many more blessings.

As we face life’s challenges, let us “be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all [our hearts and] consider what great things he has done for [us]” (1 Samuel 12:24).

Reflection: Was there a time when you allowed a negative emotion to distract you from seeing God’s goodness? How can you show Him gratitude today?

Prayer Starter:

Thank you, Lord, for being so merciful and gracious when I forget about your goodness. Please help me to remember you and give you the praise you deserve.
