You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You. —Isaiah 26:3

In my family, there's a story of a fire. Retelling it recently, my mother said, “Everything burned, Tanycia, everything except the Bible,” her voice trembling with conviction. My oldest sister recounts the story whenever November 4th, the date of the incident, comes around. It is no wonder my mother, my siblings, and I are all particular about unplugging appliances, although I was not born yet when the fire happened. Somehow, though, in the rush, I tend to forget to unplug my iron. Or at least that is what a nagging voice usually tries to convince me.
Once again, as I swung my car back to return home, fumbling for my keys, I noticed grey clouds rolling in. “Church is at 10:30; you're gonna be late AND wet,” the voice chastised again.
Entering my bedroom, I was not surprised to see the iron was unplugged. I rushed back to my car and checked the time.
10:22.
“I'm gonna be late today,” I said to my omniscient Father. Yet, as I drove, I started singing to remind myself that it is well and that I don't have to be perfect.
At the newly turned red light, I found myself speaking to the Lord again. “Lord, today isn't going as planned. I know many are my plans, but You get to decide, so I'm giving the plan of me being on time—oh, and this stoplight too—to You,” I said, refusing to look at the time. Immediately, I began to shift my focus. It's quite amazing how speaking with God does that.
I said, “Lord, I know that voice earlier was not Yours. I didn't leave the iron plugged in, and I'm sorry for listening to the wrong voice again.”
This experience reminds me of Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” While I didn't get to church on time, I was definitely reminded of God's promises and that I can just let Him be God and trust His voice to keep me in peace as He takes control. Sometimes, the greatest distraction isn't the situation itself but the fear we allow it to produce.
But God invites us to redirect our minds to Him, trust His promises, and surrender what we cannot control.
Reflect: When have you allowed fear to rob you of the peace God promises? What helped you to redirect your focus to Him?
Prayer Starter:
Father, help me to keep my mind steadfast on You. When I am tempted to let fear take control, redirect my thoughts to Your faithfulness. Teach me to surrender my worries and rest in the perfect peace You promise to those who trust You.
