It seems fitting that this devotional is scheduled to be published in August because it’s an emotional month for me and an opportunity to reflect on my journey through grief and loss. In August 2010, I lost my mom. Being still a teenager, it was  the most painful experience of my life. Then, in August 2024, I lost my grandma—my dad's mom. She passed away on the birth date of my other grandma, my mom's mom, who had passed away from breast cancer years earlier. These women were my pillars, my support, and my greatest encouragers. The grief of losing them was overwhelming. In between and after those losses, I've also said goodbye to several cousins, family members, and other loved ones.

Yet, through the pain, God has slowly given me a changed perspective. I've been able to look back with gratitude and appreciate the privilege of sharing part of my life with each of them. I've come to see grief differently. The depth of my sorrow reflects the depth of my love. I grieved deeply because I loved them dearly. The Bible tells us that Jesus wept at the death of His dear friend Lazarus (John 11:35). This tells us that grief is not a sign of weakness but a natural response to love and loss. Jesus also gives us this beautiful promise in Matthew 5:4: "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." 

Throughout my seasons of grief, God has faithfully sent family, friends, and even strangers to bring comfort and encouragement. Above all, the Holy Spirit has been my greatest Comforter, bringing peace when I felt overwhelmed. Losing someone we love is one of life's greatest heartbreaks. But we do not have to walk through grief alone; God’s comfort is always near.
