While vacationing in California, I decided to take advantage of the convenience of online shopping and quick delivery and ordered a part for the shelves in my closet. The part would allow the hangers to slide smoothly on the rods. I placed an order for eight pieces, and the shipment arrived a few days later. When I opened the package, I saw that only one piece was shipped. I thought maybe the remaining pieces would arrive another day. However, when I checked the invoice, it indicated that the entire order had been shipped. I was disappointed and dismayed, and I would need to contact Customer Service to query why the order was wrong. I did so a couple days later and explained my scenario. The agent was very helpful and reassured me that I would receive the parts in three days.
The new shipment arrived, and once more when I opened the package, only one item was included. I thought, This can’t be happening again. I was disappointed, but I refused to get mad, and I decided to not contact Customer Service again. I said to myself, This must be a sign from the Holy Spirit.
When I finally returned home in Belize, I checked to see if the parts would fit. Lo and behold, they did not! I had ordered the wrong sizes. I thought, Wow, now I’m very sure the Holy Spirit was sending me a message. I am left with only two useless parts instead of eight!
At times in life, we are unsure whether we’re making the right decision. However, Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” As we begin a new year, let’s take a moment to reflect on those words, then earnestly put them into practice—whether in small matters like my closet improvement attempt or in major life decisions.
Reflect: Is there an important decision that you’re grappling with? How can you invite the Holy Spirit to be a part of the process?
Prayer Starter:
Thank you, God, for guiding me in my life choices. In this new year, continue to guide my decisions, and help me to see situations, people, and opportunities with Your eyes.
