The Climb

I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. —Philippians 4:13(NLT)

In 2019 when I moved to San Ignacio to attend discipleship school, I took a part-time job at a peanut factory, which I enjoyed very much. However, I dreaded my morning walk to work, which required climbing up a hill that was very long and steep, with nothing to hold on to. I avoided looking back because it was a scary sight, and I feared slipping and falling, especially when it rained. Every time I approached that hill, I took a deep breath and asked God to join me on the climb. As I breathed deeply to catch my breath, I spoke to myself: I will make it up this hill. God is with me. I did this for 8 months, and there was never a time that I slipped or failed to make it to the top.

At times we encounter steep hills in our lives that seem impossible to climb. Sometimes, they can be scary and overwhelming. However, like Paul says in Philippians 4:13, “I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength (NLT). When we’re faced with a situation that seems impossible and in faith we choose to ask God to join us in that struggle, we know that we are not alone.

During your uphill struggles in life, you may have times when you don't feel that God is next to you, that he has abandoned you. That’s the enemy trying to distract you with lies. During those times, it is necessary to take a break, and remember that God is always with you when you trust in Him.

Reflect: Is there a hill you're facing right now that seems impossible to climb? How can you invite God to be part of that uphill journey?
