Recently I bought an ethernet wire to get a stronger connection on my laptop when I'm in my room. I had planned to have it professionally installed from outside the house but decided to run the wire myself from inside. Then a problem arose: there wasn’t enough space at the bottom of the door to push the wire under it. I tried both sides of the door, and the wire fit with the door open, but it was squished when I closed the door. I felt defeated. Finally, I just gave up and left the wire passing through at the side of the door, which meant it would eventually break from being squished so much. 

Entering the room a few days later, I looked up and saw a fairly large gap at the top of the door – big enough to comfortably run the wire through and close the door with ease. How did I not see it the week before? If I had taken the time to examine the problem some more, I would have noticed the best solution. All I had to do was look up. 

In a similar way, we often fail to see solutions to the problems of life because we don't look to God. We lean on our own understanding, which typically leads to poor choices. We try everything we know for solutions and don’t see that God is there all along to show us what to do. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (NLT). 

We need God in every area of our lives. When we “look up” to Him in prayer and “look up” what His word has to say, we solve our problems much more easily and effectively than our own ideas ever could.
