Build On the Rock

Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. —Matthew 7:24

As I lay in bed getting ready to pray with my son Isaac recently, I thought of how much my life had changed since becoming a mother. I wanted the absolute best life for Isaac. Then I thought of our Heavenly Father and all the plans He made for us to have the absolute best life. I pondered the times when I lived a selfish life, regardless of hurting those around me. A life of partying, drinking, and hanging out with the wrong crowd in hopes of “living life to the fullest.” For the moment it all seemed exciting, but as my life began to unravel, the emptiness within my soul grew. By my mid-twenties, I was fed up with doing things my way. My marriage was suffering because of the self-exalted life I was living. How could I be a good mother to Isaac with the weight of my sins dragging me down?

Tears trickled down my face as I entered the doors of LifeNet Church, searching for a seat in the back. I wanted someone to urgently fix the mess I had created in my life. I needed forgiveness. I needed mercy. I needed guidance. I needed a new life. I needed Jesus.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). The more I meditated on those words, the more I saw the importance of doing life with Jesus. We live in a broken world that is continually changing, but Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:7-8). Matthew 7:24-25 says, “everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Building our life with Christ as the foundation equips us for the trials and storms. When we walk in obedience to Him, our soul is made whole, and we become all that God made us to be.

Reflection: When you encounter trials in your life, do you numb the pain by giving in to the things of the world, or do you lean on the arms of the Father?
